BRIEF 4 – FINAL IMAGES

Final Images

Evaluation

This has been a tricky brief to evaluate, as there was no specific initial idea given at the start.  While I would say that overall I am happy with the images I have produced, I would also say that they are a little too edited.  Considering the fact that I was mainly going for the photographic style of Justin Minns, my images appear much darker and are nowhere near as vibrant as those produced by Minns.  However, the photographs are still definitely of a very good quality, and do not appear over-edited.  The natural appearances of the riverside photo and the view through the trees remind me of the work of Patrice Scott as they do not appear as though they are overly edited.

Nonetheless, the images do work together as a series and are very much related to the theme of ‘Home’ to me.  They are presented in this order as it is the chronological order that I found each location on my journey from Lincoln to Washingborough.  While I can’t say that there aren’t any abandoned railway bridges near me back home, the idea of being in a rural landscape, surrounded by open fields and woodland areas is something that I am very used to.  I would say that it was definitely worth exploring a new location for this brief, and working in these unfamiliar surroundings gave me a good excuse to work with the settings of my camera.  Working in an area with lots of foliage and canopies, it was a bit of a challenge to find the right lighting opportunities and settings on my camera that would best show the image without having to do too much work in LightRoom.

Finally, my last criticism of my images is that only one of the images is a different shape.  I feel that if all my images in the series were the same dimensions, there would be a lot more uniformity to the imagery.  By having one image square while the rest are rectangle, I feel that the audience may be drawn away from the content of the image and more to the fact that only one image appears physically different to the others.  This image could have been made into a rectangle, although I feel that a key part of the image would have been lost to cropping.

Wholeheartedly though, I am happy with what I have produced, although do recognise that there are a fair amount of improvements that could have been made, had I gone out with my camera more to practise.
